Another Reason the Earth is in Trouble....

Rob told me the other day he was walking to (or from I don't remember) work from (or to) the train station in the city, and he overheard a conversation of someone on the street near him, and the guy was saying that he left his air conditioner on all day when he wasn't home because he "didn't want to come home to a hot apartment" (Rob said he wanted to hit the guy and shake some sense into him or something.  I don't blame him.  I would also.)

HOW INCREDIBLY AND HORRIBLY SELFISH IS THAT!?!?!?!?!

And we wonder why the earth is going to die from Global Warming.  If we all were JUST A LITTLE more selfless, then a HUGE difference could be made.  I once BLOGged about it.  And you can get more info by clicking on "The Inconvenient Truth" link somewhere to your left in the "Links I Like" section.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Only 14 more days until Harry Potter.  As my eager husband keeps reminding me.  He can't wait for the 7th and final book to come out.  I've been hearing "I can't wait for Harry Potter" for MONTHS!  And while I am really looking forward to reading the book, I'm sad too, because there aren't any more too look forward to now!  I almost feel that if I hold off on reading it, I can still have the joy of looking forward to it.

We pre-ordered the book from Amazon.  When the 6th book came out, we ordered 2 copies so that one of us didn't have to wait for the other to finish reading it.  And then I gave the second copy to a friend, because why did we need 2 copies?  This time I told him to just order one, I'll let him eagerly read it first, and I can look forward to it for another few days.  Unless he starts talking about it and gasping and all that stuff.  That would frustrate me.

I do have a lot of questions and ideas regarding book 7, things I want to know about and theories I'm formulating about how it all will turn out. I definitely think it's going to be a dark and twisted maybe not so much for children type of book.  I won't go into all of my thoughts here, but my biggest one is, I'm pretty sure Harry is going to die.  JKR has hinted to that on countless occasions, and we know that her hints usually make sense later on.  People continually ask her if she plans to write about Harry's life after Hogwart's, and she always says How do we know he'll make it, or live that long?  So I think, as much as I don't like the idea, that Harry is going to die in Book 7.  BUT, I can't imagine her sending the message to all the children of the world that evil wins over good.  ESPECIALLY since that good and love is better magic and just plain better all around and will always triumph over dark magic is a theme that has woven itself into the very heart of the entire series.  So I wonder how this will happen.  Maybe Harry will die afterward or in the process of also killing Voldemort, or he'll have to sacrifice himself to make it happen etc.  And I DON'T believe that Harry is a horcrux, despite that popular theory.  And I DO believe, as incredibly sad as it makes me, that Dumbledore is dead.  I cried through the last few chapters of the 6th book.  But then again, I've been predicting this since the middle of the 4th book when JKR starts describing how old and tired Dumbledore is.  So I'm not so sure how this all is going to happen.  Though I'm sure it will alllll make sense once I read the book.

But then there won't be ANY MORE Harry Potter to look forward to!  It's like when they cancelled Star Trek Voyager.  I looked forward to each new episode of the final season, and then the series finale, but then it was OVER.  And now I have all but like 2 or 3 episodes on tape, but it isn't the same as looking forward to knowing what's going to happen next in the story.  ESPECIALLY since they made it back to the Alpha Quadrant so abruptly at the end of the show and there wasn't any explanation or closure to it.  That frustrated me A LOT!  And what about that whole Chakotay and Seven of Nine thing that they just sort of threw on you at the last minute.    But I digress.....

This one had me laughing, I couldn't resist posting it here. ESPECIALLY since I had Jury Duty last week.

TEEE HEEEE!!!!! The things my co-workers email to me!

4th of July

Wanting to say a quickie something before I head out, WHY did I volunteer to work today???

  Someone remind me???  Oh yeah, so I can get paid holiday time on a Wednesday and not 

use a PTO day...  THAAATs right.  Doesn't help that I'm up early and my husband is sleeeeeeeping away.

Anyway, my July 4th message.  PLEASE be careful with any home fireworks, or even better, don't use anything more @ home past sparklers.  (I grew up in NYC where anything more than that is illegal so I find it weird to find fireworks stands selling all sorts of stuff on the streets)  But I worked on a burn unit for 2 years and I know enough from that experience to know that these fireworks, even the "legal" ones at the stands are DANGEROUS.  I had one patient who was holding one, not lit yet or anything, and it randomly exploded in his hand.  He was lucky to survive and even luckier to still have his hand at the end of the ordeal.

And on a summertime get together especially today, a BBQ warning, BE CAREFUL!  I've seen too many people with burns from BBQ's, because they weren't careful let alone being just plain dumb.  Pouring lighter fluid on a hot propane BBQ, NOT a good idea.... 

Ok, and while I'm sending out warnings, I also spent a summer working on a rehab unit for patients with spinal cord injuries (paraplegics, quadriplegics etc) AND I've worked with a ton of brain injury patients also so with THAT knowledge, don't drink and drive or drink and dive (into a pool) for that matter, don't let friends do them either, WEAR YOUR SEAT BELTS!!!  and take care with a motorcycle, and ALWAYS wear a helmet no matter WHAT the law says that you can.  It's NOT safe.  Trust me.

Anyway, I don't mean to sound like an alarmist, but I just want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday, and safe and happy and serious injury free lives.  

Ok, time to go drag,   oops, did I say drag,  I mean HELP people out of bed....  BYEEEEE!!!! 

Moved in!

But not unpacked. No where NEAR unpacked. Still buried in boxes. But hey, I have more space for all those boxes.

Our first night in our new home, we climb into bed, exhausted, I turn out the lights and suddenly I hear "HOLY SH**T!!!!" from Rob, and I look up and see that the previous owner or the one before him, I don't know, had splattered glow in the dark paint on the ceiling so it looks like stars. No pattern or constellations, just random splatters of paint. But it kinda looks like your looking up at a galaxy or something. It was pretty cool and weird looking all at the same time! Rob and I were hysterical for like 10 minutes over it. Who knew??? No one had said anything to us and we just found out on our first night, the first time we turned out the lights. So we have no clue how far this goes back, which previous owner did it, but it's so funny! We don't love it, but then again, we don't hate it enough to bother painting over the ceiling. So I guess I'll have stars to look at before I go to sleep from now on... :)

Okey, time to go do more unpacking. Just thought I'd share something funny from my first few days in my new home. TEE HEE!!

•The Adirondack Park is comprised of about 6.1 million acres (9,375 square miles).

•The park is the size of the state of Vermont.

•There's no marked boundary to the park, no "entrance gate" and no admission fee.

•The Adirondack Park is the largest protected area in the contiguous United States, delineated by the famous "blue line."

18 Things I Love about my New Home (in no particular order)

1) The built in bookcase that takes up the WHOLE wall on the landing from the first floor to the second floor staircase from the floor all the way to the second floor ceiling.




2) A bigger kitchen! Which means SPACE! Space to cook, space to bake, space to move, and best of all, space to open my refrigerator door all the way open if I need to!





3) The BLUE WALL in my kitchen!





4) The picture window wherer I'm putting my herb garden in my new bigger kitchen!

5) The ability to paint walls any color I want instead of leaving them just plain white! (See above, my SUPERGROVER BLUE wall!)

6) Light, Light, Light, Light, Light, Light! This place gets a lot of good LIGHT! and I love good sunlight!

7) A finished "basement"! (The basement is only half underground because the condo is on a hill, so one end is sort of underground an the other end walks right out onto ground level.)

8) The Wet bar in the basement with sliders out to my postage stamp sized backyard.



9) The room in the finished "basement" that actually gets a lot of light so I can paint down there! And it's right by the wet bar so I have a sink to use for my watercolors!

10) The postage stamp sized backyard where I can grow tomatoes! And have just enough room to make a Sukkah!



11) Space to have people over! (Once I have a dining room table that is...)

12) A fireplace!


13) A second bathroom! (I've NEVER EVER EVER had one of those!)

14) A second Bedroom!

15) Walking distance to shul! Whoo Hoo!!

16) More closet space.

17) A gas oven and range. I hate cooking with electric. Gas is much easier to fine tune and control.

18) It's alllll ours!!!!

Slight Changes

I upgraded to Blogger Beta and their new template format HTML system thing I tried to get things looking pretty much the way they were, I like the color scheme etc, I had to do some HTML color fiddling. Biggest change is my info on the LEFT. The template I had was minima but there was one called minima lefty. I'm a lefty, I had to use it :) Maybe I'll start BLOGging more often again.....

Two posts in one day... I'm sick. Stayed home from work so now I'm laying around sniffling and coughing and keeping myself entertained, or at least trying. I was off a good part of last week for Shavuot and packing and then we went away to VT for Memorial Day Weekend, somewhere around Thursday i got sick, sre throat, stuffy head, runny nose, the works. So it was a laying around sick in VT weekend instead of laying arond sick in CT. (Wow, I almst wrote NY, sitll not used to living in CT, or still won't admt to it anyway...) I don't like laying around sick for all of those days, it makes me feel useless and lazy, especially when there's SO much stuff I need to do, packing and cleaning and all that stuff. We're closing on our condo tomorrow, lookingforward to it, but not not while not feeling well. Hopefully I'll feel somewhat betterer by Thursday and can go to work and get people out of bed and feel useful and not lazy.

Ok I'm rambling. I think I need a nap.

Resume Language

I'm getting a new student in June. Which will be nice, i haven't had a student since last summer. I just hope this one is easier than the last... My last student wa s atom of stress and incompetance. And that's tough to deal with in a hospital setting where there are life and death situations that you have to work around.

Anyway...

Our clinical coordinator gave me her file today. Part of the file was her resume so I knew her work experience. (I love this school, they are so over organized, it's great!) I love resume language. I love how anything can be turned around for anything in a resume to make you sound like the best potential hire out there. I do the same with mine, we all do, but I loved these. So way down at the bottom of the work experience section it says that she had been a waitress like 10 years ago when she was in college.

Her Waitress Responsibilities:

Serve gourmet food & wine…. Sounds ok, like a waitress would do.

Multitasked in a fast paced environment…… true, restaurants are definitely like that, but it's starting to be interesting to see how that is played out on a resume

And my favorite

Learned the direct correlation between customer satisfaction and personal salary.

Color! Color! Color! Color! Color! Color! Color! Color!

Now that we're on the way to actually OWNING a home, I am really excited to PAINT IT!!!!!! I am completely tired of white white white walls. I want COLOR COLOR COLOR!!! And so my time lately has been spent looking at paint colors and trying to decide which rooms get painted which colors, because if I can help it I don't want a shred of stark white paint in this house. I want color or at least a light shade of something other than hospital white anywhere that there is paint. I am bored to pieces with white paint on the walls. Plus I wear tan/khaki and black @ work, so I've really been feeling the need for color.


So here are some of my ideas.


I'd love to do my kitchen in RED. I think kitchens should be bright and happy places to be. And I love to cook and bake as we well know, so I really want a bright space to do it in. Rob on the other hand isn't so happy about red. He thinks its a bit TOO much color. He wants to do yellow. I like yellow, and it's a great kitchen color, but I'm a little tired of it at the same time. Yellow is getting boring for me. I had a yellow bedroom at two different times growing up, when I was young, and then again as I got older after college etc, for the brief like six months I was at home anyway. But the yellow is still there. (There was turquoise in between, I can't believe I had a turquoise room! OY!) My parents have a yellow kitchen too. Yellow is almost too common a color for a kitchen. It fulfills the bright and open feeling of a room, but I want to do somethig a bit different. Green I'd like to do as a warm color in the bedroom, not a super bright color in the kitchen. Blues are ok, I could live with shades closer to a royal blue, but I don't want to get too close to the turquoise route again, and I don't like purple shades. Neither do I like orange. So a red feels to be to be perfect for a bright kitchen. Not too too orangy bright red, but a vibrant rich color that can be both bright and welcoming and not TOO shocking. That's my vision anyway. Whether we do it is another.

I like bright primary colors, Rob like warmer more subdued colors. And I do like them too, but there's a place for rich warmth and therea a place for vibrant happy cheer you up colors.

I definately like a green for the bedroom, I think we've decided on a good shade, a warm not too dark green that gives a lot of color without feeling oppressive and closing you in, or it does on the computer simulations anyway.

The second bedroom is a blank space right now, we may wait to fully decorate it until its function is more clearly determined.

The living room has great cedar paneling which is really warm and well.... woodsy! I like that, a bit of nature into the house, sort of. Upstairs hallways and stairs not a bright color, but not white. Something light to complement the wood. The difference from white to a shade of a light color is amazing. (I've been watching a lot of redecorating and home type shows on the Discovery Channel, TLC, and HGTV. I've learned so much!)

Anyway, so that's whats been on my mind lately. Color Color Color. I'm getting excited about moving and decorating my own space and having more space... It's going to be great.

and as someone commented in my last post, housewarming party?? (Adam is that you???) When we're settled and unpacked, yes I definately want to have people over. And I'll be walking distance (a bit over a mile) from shul, which I am SO excited about. I'm really looking forwards to being so much closer. So come for Shabbat too! I'm so excited to have the space (and the wet bar in the lower level)(Gotta have those L'Chaim's!) to entertain!

News

Well, receiving a comment on my Tefillin Barbie post and replying to it gave emt he idea to write a quickie (oh baby!!!!) post before I go to schluffland.

More news... Rob and I are buying a condo! We signed the contract this past Thursday and we close @ the end of May, but we are the proud soon to be new owners of a very nice condo. :) Close to our shul and relatively affordable considering where we live and really nice inside. There levels, hardwood floors, cedar paneling in the living room, fireplace, a 16 foot tall builtin bookcase on the wall of the landing of the stair case up to the second floor, relatively new kitchen and bathrooms, a finished basement complete with a wet-bar, our little postage stamp backyard, and the best part, more than double the space we have now! Rob made a little website with pictures.

I am a BLOG SLACKER!

But I guess I've been pretty busy and not thinking much about writing to the world. HMMMMM let's see, I officially changed my name... Which feels weird. I didn't think it would feel weird, but it does. Like somehow I'm a different person, like I lost a part of my identity. It feels and looks strange to see my new name, and I really have to think when I sign something. But I am officially married with a new name! :) So thats an exciting piece of my life.

Work is the usual busy and yet nothing new. I had a patient yesterday who had come into the hospital because of a change in mental status. She also had an infection and unsteady walking and they thought she might have had a stroke. When I saw her I asked her some orientation questions. Where are you, what day is it etc. She knew exactly where she was down to the floor and room number. When I asked her if she remembered why she was in the hospital she told me "i have an infection, but they all think I'm cuckoo! and I'm not cuckoo!!!

So there's not too much more to write about. If inspiration strikes I'll update. Have a Happy NEEEEEWWWW YEAR!!!!!

DONUTS!!!! Is there anything they can't do???

Ahhh the wisdom of Homer Simpson.

I've been watching my wedding video over and over and over this week, and I've noticed a few things about some of Rob's and my friends. They're donuts!! (this is a compliment!) They can do ANYTHING!!!

Sing, play an instrument, both, dance, are smart, creative, generous, fun to be around, genuinely good friends, can give advice, can speak at length to a crowd on any subject practically and still make it sound really interesting, can make people smile, laugh, cheer them up, are teachers sharing their wealth of knowledge and intelligence, help people on a day to day basis, can speak multiple languages.......... "Is there anything these people can't do," Rob asked me the other day???? "I don't think so," I said. "They can do pretty much anything I think. They're DONUTS!!!!"



So I 've decided to call these people donuts. A few friends that we have that are so versitile, so great at everything they try, are they perfect?? I dunno. But as Homer says, "Is there ANYTHING they can't do???" So, they're donuts. Yummy!!!

Friday I saw a patient, and I asked her how tall she was so I could get her a walker that was the right size. She told me
"I USED to be 5'0", but I shrunk. I'm now 5'11"" tee hee! Gotta love those percocets!!!
